L’autenticazione eIDAS è un primo importante passo verso l'integrazione dei servizi erogati dalle pubbliche amministrazioni dell'Unione Europea.
Il Regolamento comunitario 23/07/2014, n. 910/2014 In materia di identificazione elettronica e servizi fiduciari per le transazioni elettroniche nel mercato interno e che abroga la direttiva 1999/93/CE, conosciuto come Regolamento eIDAS, promuove la cooperazione transfrontaliera e l’interoperabilità dei sistemi nazionali d'identificazione elettronica (eID), per facilitare l'accesso dei cittadini e delle imprese ai servizi pubblici digitali nei diversi Stati membri in cui tale accesso è consentito tramite l'autenticazione eID.
Tramite nodo italiano eIDAS l'identità digitale di un cittadino di uno Stato membro può essere utilizzata per accedere ai servizi online della Pubblica Amministrazione o di privati negli altri stati membri della Unione Europea.
L'autenticazione tramite eIDAS funziona così:
- il cittadino di uno stato membro che vuole accedere ai servizi di un Service Provider chiede di autenticarsi tramite eIDAS
- il Service Provider trasmette la richiesta al nodo eIDAS italiano
- il nodo eIDAS italiano inoltra la richiesta al nodo eIDAS dello stato membro
- il nodo eIDAS dello stato membro inoltra la richiesta all'Identity Provider
- l'Identity Provider dello stato membro verifica l'identità del cittadino e restituisce le informazioni associate
- l'asserzione d'identità viene restituita al Service provider seguendo il percorso inverso

The Regulation 23/07/2014, n. 910/2014 of the European Parliament and of the Council on electronic identification and trust services for electronic transactions in the internal market and repealing Directive 1999/93/EC, known as eIDAS regulation, promotes cross-border cooperation and system interoperability of national electronic identification (eID), to facilitate citizens and businesses access to digital public services in Member States adhering to eID authentication.
Through the eIDAS Italian node, the digital identity of a member state citizen can be used to access the online services of the public administration in other member states of the European Union.
- the citizen of a Member State who wants to access the services of a Service Provider asks to authenticate through eIDAS
- the Service Provider transmits the request to the Italian eIDAS node
- the Italian eIDAS node forwards the request to the Member State's eIDAS node
- the eIDAS node of the Member State forwards the request to the citizen Identity Provider
- the Member State Identity Provider verifies the identity of the citizen and returns the associated information
- the identity assertion is returned to the service provider following the reverse path
